Dear Parent/Carer
Welcome to a packed newsletter. Our students have certainly been busy in and out of school over the past two weeks.
A highlight has been the early stages of the recruitment process for our next student senior team; Head Girl, Deputy and two Assistants. The standard of applications is extremely high this year and I had the privilege of listening to their speeches and reading their letters of application. I'm excited to introduce the new team to you in the next newsletter.
If there is one thing I hope you do after reading this edition through, is buy tickets for the PTA Chocolate Easter Bingo evening. A popular annual event, it would be lovely to celebrate the end of term, and in calorific style! There are lots of prizes to be won and it is a great family event. Bring younger siblings, grandparents and neighbours for an evening of fun and community spirit. All welcome!
Finally, we have a space on our Local Governing Body for a community governor. If you know someone who would be interested in supporting the strategic direction of our fantastic school, Debbie Scott, Governance professional
debbie.scott@robertcarretrust.uk
or James Hoyes, the Chair of the KSHS Local Governance Tier, james.hoyes@kshs.uk would love to hear from you and can chat about the role. The time commitment needed is manageable alongside a job and the role would equally suit someone who is retired or balancing a busy home life.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education

This term has seen the KSHS PSHE curriculum reach beyond the fortnightly classroom lesson, with a host of fantastic visiting presenters joining us for a range of workshops. While the vital topics covered are visited in our timetabled Personal Development and PSHE provision, we find that dedicating a day to their coverage with these specialist speakers enhances student engagement and helps them to remember the key messages. Our PSHE days also offer us valuable interactions with our local communities; we greatly appreciate working with this wider network to help our pupils know how to make informed and healthy choices, now and in the future.
Year 7 Stay Safe Day – Friday 7 March
This first PSHE day offered introduction topics we feel are particularly valuable to our youngest students: Healthy Relationships, Alcohol and Drugs, Online Safety, Road Safety, and Anti-Social Behaviour led by Lincolnshire Police. Our Year 7 students did a fantastic job at being involved in these workshops, asking some thoughtful questions and getting the most from each session. They commented on being able to confidently identify ‘warning signs for online scams’ and to 'never give out any personal details online, even on personal profiles or in photos’.
Year 9 Stay Safe Day – Monday 10 March
Our second PSHE day of the year saw Year 9s revisiting topics such as Drug Awareness and Online Safety, as well as considering more specific areas within our other key categories. Healthy Relationships looked at Cyberstalking and touched on identifying controlling behaviours or ‘red flags’ in relationships. Our guest from Lincolnshire Police spoke to students about Knife Crime, reflecting on a key national conversation, while vital lessons on Fire Safety were shared in a dynamic session by a member of the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service. A range of important lessons were addressed throughout the day, with many students valuing how the ‘drug effects goggles’ helped them to understand how severely intoxication can affect the senses and create risks.

Year 11 PSHE Day – Friday 14 March
After a week of focused revision and the challenge of mock examinations, Year 11 enjoyed their second PSHE day of the year. We welcomed staff from Lincolnshire Police qualified to visit schools and engage young people in learning about Violence Against Women and Girls. This session focused on Violence in Intimate Relationships and even gave students the opportunity to participate in a mock jury, encouraging them to evaluate their position on justice and the law in relation to Sexual Harassment.
Alongside this workshop, Year 11 considered: perceptions of beauty, cosmetic procedures, and how social media can influence appearance ideals in their session on ‘Body Matters’; the impacts of vaping with the BBC documentary ‘The Truth About Vaping’; the most effective study skills and revision strategies in ‘How to Conquer Year 11’; and future opportunities and career routes with an online ‘Unifrog’ workshop.
We hope all our Year 7, Year 9 and Year 11 pupils enjoyed their PSHE days this year and feel confident in the important lessons they have covered.

Personal Development and PSHE Co-Ordinator

On the morning of Wednesday 5 March, the whole of Year 7 took part in a STEM event run by Processing and Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA). The year group had the opportunity to find out about careers in STEM with various inspirational speakers, including James Causebrook the managing director of Grunwald who are based locally in Blankney.
They then were given the challenge to use limited resources to create a ‘Roller Loader’ to keep a marble running for as long as possible. This gave them a small taste of the skills needed to be successful in engineering – problem solving, time management, creativity, resources management, and teamwork.
The second task was to create an innovative new product in just 20 minutes. They then had to deliver a 40 second ‘elevator pitch’ to the whole year group. The winning team designed a ‘robo whale’, a mechanical whale which would make use of AI to swim through the ocean, scanning for and collecting litter.
All students should be proud of their efforts and hopefully got a small taste of where a career in STEM could take them.

Maths Feast
The maths feast is a mathematics competition of four rounds. Year 10 were split into teams of four, and travelled to Walton Academy, where they were shown into a hall and seated accordingly, one table per team, one teacher per team. There were many other schools there, all competing against each other with fourteen teams in total. The rounds varied massively; Some involved tracing ribbons around cubes while others required diagnosing calculator problems and others were simply logic problems which required skill and teamwork to solve. All 4 rounds were based on one thing: problem-solving. The atmosphere was often tense but eased into sociability in-between the rounds: for some schools there was rivalry while others simply chatted amongst themselves.
In my opinion, our biggest competitor was time. Our team only completely finished one of the 4 rounds, with most teams finishing none of them at all. At the end of each round, the top 5 scorers would be read aloud in reverse order. After 3 rounds, we stopped for lunch where we were served some of the best biscuits we’ve ever eaten and a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
Overall, I found the experience well worth my time: the problems were interesting and challenging, some being simple addition, while others were extraordinarily challenging. One of our teams managed to place 2nd overall, missing gold by only two points, which they found very frustrating.

14 March 2025 – Pi Day! 3.1415926535
Students at KSHS experienced a number of Pi day activities in their maths lessons on and around Pi Day.
Year 7 completed a Pi related wordsearch and had a go at writing a Piem, a story or poem with each word the length of the digits in Pi. Here was one of our favourites by Maisy Dring in 7NP:
Pie, I love you
I munch carefully
It dances, jumps and sings
Some Year 8 students looked at the best value pizza calculating the area and cost per square inch, whereas other students drew Pi Day skylines (examples from Krishita and Freya).

|
|
Year 9 were set the challenge of learning the most digits of Pi – 31 was a record in one class.
We currently have our Pi Day competition, ending on Monday 24 March, where students have been set the following challenges:
- to bake or cook something Pi related such Pi shaped cookies, or a delicious pie!
- To craft something Pi related, such as a paper chain or bracelet with colours relating to the digit
- To write a pi-ku poem where the first line has 3 syllables, the second line 1 syllable, and the last line 4 syllables
We would love to see all your entries, with prizes for the most creative.

On Tuesday 4 March 2025, Year 12 and 13 Historians had the fantastic and rare opportunity to hear eight Historians lecture/ debate on different aspects of the War of the Roses. The online schools conference was organised by the Richard III society. The Historians provided an academic insight into different topics that students look at during the two-year course. There was also a talk by an admissions tutor from the University of Winchester for those are interested in studying History at university. This is the second time we have participated in this event and look forward to attending it again next year.

A Level Psychology Revision - in a day?
|
|
A-Level Psychology students from the Sleaford Joint Sixth Form joined 400 other local students for a Grade Booster Workshop in Leeds. They were put through their paces, revising the whole two-year course in a day! Emphasis was placed on core concepts (e.g. research methods, approaches, issues and debates), common areas of misunderstanding (e.g. statistical tests!) and exam technique (e.g. writing effective essays). As you can imagine, this was an invaluable trip and one that was highly appreciated by the students that attended.

On Thursday 6 March students from Years 11-13 had the opportunity to visit the Sleaford Joint Sixth Form Careers Fair hosted at St George’s Academy. A wide range of colleges, universities and employers were present, allowing students to ask questions about their future options, whether that be further or higher education, apprenticeships or employment opportunities. Students asked lots of questions, bagged some freebies and even got dressing up! With over 60 organisations attending, there really was something for everyone. Our thanks go to St George’s Academy for hosting the event.

This week sees our students using our newly refurbished rehearsal space – V0. Financed by the funds raised from our concerts, it houses equipment to allow our students to organise and rehearse their bands. Our thanks to the Site team and Finance to help get this incredibly useful space in our school.

On Sunday 9 March, Abbie (Year 10) took part in a 12 hour long ‘drumathon’ organised by our drum teacher Karina at Shug Studios in Sleaford. This was to help raise money for the school’s visit to Nambia 2026. Abbie was supported by many local musicians and students and thanks to everyone’s support raised over £1200. Well done Abbie!

Our pre-loved uniform shop is low on stock! If you have any uniform at home that your child has outgrown but is still in good condition, please consider donating to the PTA pre-loved shop. Simply drop items in a bag to Reception, or to Mrs Stokes, Assistant Headteacher, in school. All items of school uniform that are clean and in good condition (except socks and tights) are welcome.
Thank you for your support of the PTA which raises valuable funds for ‘extras’ in school. The PTA has recently bought additional benches for the school grounds. These are for students’ use at break and lunchtimes; very welcome as the weather warms up!

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.

On the 7 March, we organised a teacher dodgeball competition to raise money for the trip to Namibia in 2026.
This is a great cause, where we will be spending some time helping a school with anything they need. This could be painting murals or decorating their classrooms which will make a positive impact on their daily lives. Many thanks to all who came to watch and who donated.
