Dear Parent/Carer
The end of term speeds towards us and whilst there is one more newsletter to go, this one is full of information we hope you find useful. Included in this edition are plans for parents’ evenings next year and an indication of school trips already in the planning and available to your child(ren). Both inclusions are a direct response to our parents’ survey responses and to parental feedback throughout the year. I’m genuinely grateful to those parents who take time to respond to our surveys or who pass on their thoughts, concerns, or suggestions to us. Constructive collaboration and feedback is always received in the spirit it’s intended – thank you!
Elsewhere in this edition read about the tremendous year the Drama department has had and all the extra curricular opportunities that have been available to students. It’s a busy time of year for History trips and Geography fieldwork too. Our trips programme always aims to focus on experiences that are enjoyable but also educational or culturally enriching. We hope to introduce students to experiences they might not discover otherwise, whether that’s measuring groynes in Skegness or hearing from specialists in their fields. Our alumni tell us that it's sometimes those kinds of trips that lit a learning lightbulb for them.
At the end of the newsletter, you’ll also find a poster from Call Connect – they are offering a bargain school holiday service which your young people might like to take advantage of, for bookable public transport. I know that as a bored teenager who lived in a Lincolnshire village, this would have been very welcome in the summer holidays when I was at secondary school!
And finally, thanks to all the parents who collected their children from our Open Evening on Tuesday: your support was much appreciated. We had a packed school with plenty of prospective parents and students who commented on how brilliant the Year 7-12 tour guides and subject helpers were. If you would like to see the presentation given to parents, it can be found here Kesteven & Sleaford High School - Open Days (kshs.uk).

Parents' Evenings Next Year
You said.....We have.....
Thank you to all parents who responded to my newsletter and separate letter enquiry to all current parents about parents’ evenings next academic year.
The letter offered a link to a survey in which the main question asked was whether you would prefer to attend face to face or online parents’ evenings next year.
Thanks to all of you who gave your feedback and took time to give additional comments. We received 161 responses.

As a result of your views, along with parental feedback we have received during the year, we have decided that academic parents’ evenings (when parents need to see around 10 different teachers) will operate online except for Year 7 and Year 11. We feel that it will be helpful for Year 7 parents to get to know the staff teaching their children more personally, and feedback from Year 11 parents this year suggested a face to face meeting was helpful in the important GCSE year. You can also see other parent meetings in the schedule below too.
Thanks as ever for your support and engagement with our annual planning.

As the year draws to a close, we thought it might be handy for you to have an overview of some of the educational trips (both in the planning and proposed) for next academic year. This is by no means an exhaustive list and some trips and visits will be added as the year unfolds. Please be aware these are simply educational visits that require either voluntary or compulsory parental contributions and are in addition to the many extra-curricular events that take place in school and off site in the locality.
I hope it's helpful for planning purposes. We look forward to updating you with any additions as the year goes on and opportunities present themselves.

Islamic Art – Use of Geometry
Year 7 are currently studying constructions in Maths and as part of our cross-curricular work we have been looking at Islamic Art and how it uses geometric shapes. Isel (7A) has helped deliver lessons, talking about the Art that is used in her culture and has shared with us different examples of where it is used. All Year 7 classes have tried making their own examples of Islamic art using constructions with a pair of compasses.

Parental Consultation - Relationship, Sex and Health Education
Each year we invite parents to share their views on our school Relationships, Sex and Health Education policy. This is a statutory policy for all secondary schools and in it we lay out how we will deliver this important curriculum area. You can read it here https://www.kshs.uk/attachments/download.asp?file=808&type=pdf
This policy is not to be confused with the government’s pending consultation which you can find here Review of the RSHE statutory guidance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). As a Trust we follow government guidance, and this is likely to mean further updates to our school policy during the year. If you have any observations or comments you would like to make, please do pass them onto our governance professional Mrs D Scott Debbie.Scott@robertcarretrust.uk for consideration by the Local Governing Body at their next meeting.

Term 6 is a busy one in the History Department for trips and it was a real pleasure to accompany Year 7 on the annual trip to Warwick Castle. Please see below for an article from two of our students who wrote about their experiences of the trip. From Falconry to War of the Roses to Jousting, it was a busy day and my thanks go to all the staff who joined us and made the trip possible, but a special thanks to Mr Dennis for organising the trip.
Team History are looking forward to the remainder of Term 6 where we will be taking Year 8 on their trip to Burghley House and Year 10 on their trip to Lincoln Castle for their ‘History Around Us’ GCSE Unit.

Year 7 went on an extremely fun and educational trip to Warwick Castle. During the bus ride back to Sleaford train station I asked a few of my friends what they thought of the trip, most of them agreed that it was very enjoyable.
While we were there, there was an awe-inspiring bird of prey show! We saw bald eagles, falcons, vultures and much, much more! They told us the story of how and why Warwick castle had these amazing birds too.
While we were at Warwick castle we went on a walk along the wall! But be warned, it is NOT for anyone with claustrophobia! While walking along the wall we entered Guy’s Tower and Caesar's Tower with A LOT of winding staircases! The views we saw were amazing! But NOT for the faint hearted!
We also saw a glimpse of the glamourous inside of the castle, there were many bedrooms, studies, and stairs! The atmosphere of the castle was very medieval. Plus, there were sculptures of people that once inhabited the castle. They had air conditioning scattered throughout the castle, so we kept cool throughout the trip!

'Be Inspired' A Level English and Drama Experience Day
On Thursday 13 June, the KSHS English Literature A Level class attended the Lincoln University and Lincoln Arts Centre 'Be Inspired' experience day. The aims of this English and Drama trip were to appreciate a local university, take part in university-level workshops, and engage in literature analysis from a new perspective.
The first workshop challenged the students to produce a premise for dystopian fiction. Although this creative writing task put some out of their comfort zone, they had some fantastic ideas. In the second workshop, on devising drama, Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel 'The Handmaid's Tale' inspired some fascinating improvisations, considering how simple or absurd choices in staging and movement - such as donning a badger mask or suddenly changing pace - can convey power and oppression.
In the third and final workshop, the group engaged in a session targeting Shakespeare's 'Othello', one of their core exam texts. They were tasked to evaluate their relationship with scripted drama in comparison to prose and gained some useful insights into the play.
Well done to all of our Year 12 Literature students for getting involved!

Year 12 Geography Fieldwork Visits
Last week the Geography Department was busy taking the Year 12 students out and about on fieldtrips.
By visiting Sheffield and Hunstanton, the students have been able to collect primary data which they need to write up their Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) which comprises 20% of the A-Level grade.
The first day was spent in Sheffield where students visited different areas of the city including Meadowhall, Park Hill and Ecclesall Road. Here the students were investigating a range of geographical topics including variations in social deprivation, changes in the urban landscape and the impact of regeneration. The second day was spent visiting Hunstanton where students were investigating coastal processes and management, as well as finding out tourists’ views of the sea defences. They measured beach profiles and sand build-up next to the groynes, assessed the effectiveness of the sea defences, and also looked at plant succession on sand dunes.
The Year 12 Geographers will now spend time writing up their NEAs. We look forward to reading their final projects!

What a year it has been for the Drama Department!
To start off the academic year, Year 12 and Year 13 visited Regent Theatre, Stoke on Trent. For the Live Theatre aspect of their written exam, we watched an amazing adaptation of Ocean at the End of the Lane. Everybody was blown away with the stage craft. If it tours again, we thoroughly recommend; there were audible gasps in the ‘door’ scene.
Just before Christmas, the whole of Year 7 visited the Lincoln Arts Centre to watch their interpretation of A Christmas Carol. The staging choice of the theatre company was very imaginative and our students were in the thick of the action - in the actual performance space.
The London Residential took place in March and it was a brilliant few days in Covent Garden. We did some shopping, watched Mamma Mia, ate delicious food, watched the hilarious Play That Goes Wrong and participated in workshops at Pineapple Studios, with two West End Performers.

Lots of hard work went into the whole school show – High School Spectacular! With an amazing team effort from over 50 of our students. Students contributed on stage, backstage, in tech, in design and in pure organisational skills. High School Spectacular was exactly that, the High School showcased its spectacularly hilarious students in a mash up of lots of different scenes from a variety of plays. The comic timing of our students is a treasure to behold.

In May the 6th Formers participated in a Technical Theatre Workshop with Mike Hoyle, a professional Lighting Designer & Theatre Technician. This was extremely useful ahead of written exams, where students design and analyse the technical aspects of performance.
As another aid for their upcoming Drama written exam, Year 12 and Year 13 visited The Old Vic to watch Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal – a 1920s expressionist play which is very rarely staged. The students were wowed with the theatricality and really benefitted from seeing the transfer of characters from the page, to the stage.
What will next year have in store? Well, we already have 2 theatre trips booked – one for the new Year 7 cohort and another for 6th Form, we have the London Residential in the calendar and we are just discussing performance rights for a Musical. Watch this space!

As we get ever closer to the school holidays and look forward to an opportunity to recharge, we have to also remember that some young people may find themselves struggling without the structure and support network of school.
The Anna Freud National Centre of Children and Families has produced some really excellent resources in preparation for secondary school aged students and these packs (#SelfCareSummer) feature a range of creative activities based on self-care strategies that other young people have found useful in helping them stay mentally healthy. You could print the self-care summer guide attached, or go to this link to explore a range of other resources for children and young people. Or, you can go to this link and use the flipbook:
My self-care plan: secondary (annafreud.org)
They also signpost young people and their families to additional support, including the AFC crisis messenger text service.

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
