Dear Parent/Carer
Welcome to Term 5. I hope you and your family had a lovely Easter break. Thanks to all of you who supported the PTA Easter Bingo event in the last week of term, as well as the superb ‘High School Spectacular’ – a fantastic two evenings of drama and song from students from across the year groups. All monies raised at the production will support future Drama and Music productions. The PTA continue to support the purchase of extra resources in school: this includes a planned AV system in the Sport Hall to be used for whole school events such as our celebration assemblies and to support PE teaching. Work is also underway to finalise the contractors who will deliver our refurbished Science laboratory – the result of our successful Wolfson Foundation bid.
Sadly, SJB Uniforms based in the Market Place in Sleaford, are calling time and will not be supplying school uniforms to any Sleaford school after April 2024. If you have a full loyalty card, you are able to receive 25% off stock uniform while stock lasts. We are working on sourcing another local supplier and will update you when further information is known. Uniform Direct, based in Lincoln and who offer an online service, continue as our other provider.
Do read on for lots of news from the start of term, including details of a vacancy for a parent governor role, a list of the lunchtime and after-school clubs your child can get involved in over the next 2 terms and details of lots of student successes. Live updates are available via our school Twitter/X and Instagram feeds.
Thank you for your continued support, particularly if you are a parent of Year 11 or 13 students. We appreciate that the approaching GCSEs and A-levels will be a main topic of conversation in your household!

As well as donating money and unwanted clothes for Comic Relief on Friday 15 March, students were tasked with coming up with their best one-liner joke in their Personal Development session that morning with their forms. The jokes were voted on by the form and the favourite was then entered into a staff vote to establish the best in the school.
There were some superb jokes supplied, including ‘I walked into the Doctors and said “I think I’m invisible”. The receptionist said, “Well, the doctor can’t see you today".
The favourite amongst the staff came from 9F; “I burnt my Hawaiian pizza; I should have cooked it at aloha temperature” and members of 9F received a prize in the short celebration assembly at the end of term.
A prize was also given to the joke writers in 8AH and 11JC whose jokes came 2nd and 3rd.
We hope you enjoy reading them too.
‘My wife told me to stop singing “I’m a believer”. I thought she was kidding, but then I saw her face!’
‘I met a woman who only ate vegetables – I’d never heard of herbivore’.

Huge congratulations to Sophia and Molly in Year 9 for winning the Young Journalism Fake News Competition! Throughout this term, all the KSHS Young Journalists have been learning about how to identify misinformation and ‘fake news’ on social media. They watched and discussed a speech given by Rory Cellan-Jones, a BBC Technology journalist, before deliberately creating their own ‘fake news’ in an attempt to fool their peers in the YJ club. I particularly enjoyed some of the wild claims of assault by glue stick in Sophia and Molly’s article!

‘Macbeth’ will be playing at the Sleaford Playhouse from Wednesday 8 May until Sunday 12 May. This has fallen at a very fortuitous time for the High School as Year 8 will be studying ‘Macbeth’ in English during terms five and six.

The Year 7, Year 9 and Year 13 Geographers have been busy in recent weeks carrying out fieldwork to support their learning of the curriculum.
As part of their learning about the ‘Geography of Crime,’ the Year 9 students have been investigating crime in Sleaford by collecting primary data. Students conducted their enquiries by identifying evidence of crime and methods of crime prevention. They completed questionnaires which surveyed people’s views on the issues of local crime. Environmental quality surveys were conducted to assess how the environment may influence criminal behaviour.

The Year 7 geographers have also been introduced to fieldwork enquiry by investigating the microclimate of the KSHS school grounds. They were tasked to decide and recommend which is the most suitable place to locate a new school bench. Students used anemometers to measure wind speed and thermometers to measure temperature. They annotated photographs and considered aspect and surface of the ground in their decision-making. We have enjoyed reading their reports and hearing their recommendations.

Year 13 have been studying the Carbon Cycle and Energy security. Part of the topic includes evaluating alternative energy sources and assessing their carbon footprint, so we organised a visit to the Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant to learn about how energy is generated and what it is used for. The energy plant primarily burns straw, which it draws from a 50-mile radius, as well as wood chips. While carbon dioxide is released when it’s burnt, the low mileage and the fact the straw has taken in carbon while growing, means its carbon footprint is much lower than burning fossil fuels, as well as being a renewable source of energy. Enough electricity is generated to power 65,00 homes, and the surplus heat generated by the Plant is harnessed and used for heating Sleaford’s public swimming pool, Sleaford Bowling Centre, Sleaford Town Football Club, William Alvey Primary School, and North Kesteven District Council’s office in the town. This heat is provided by the Plant free of charge.

On Saturday 16 March I did a lunchtime concert in the Lincoln Cathedral Chapter house in preparation for my Associate of the Royal Schools of Music (ARSM) diploma in singing. I sang a variety of repertoire, from modern folk arrangements by Benjamin Britten to opera arias from G.F. Handel’s Semele. As I sing in the cathedral choir as a junior choral scholar, the recital was an incredible opportunity to perform as a solo vocalist for the first time and showcase myself to my friends and colleagues. I did my diploma exam in the following week and achieved a distinction, which I am extremely proud of. I am really grateful for everyone’s support.

Starting the Duke of Edinburgh season off were our Year 9 Bronze cohort, where sixty students went to the Folkingham area to complete their practice expedition. Following in-school training, our Approved Activity Provider Lupine Adventure https://www.lupineadventure.co.uk delivered the weekend at the newly refurbished Low Farm Park Campsite https://www.lowfarmpark.co.uk.
Below are a couple of student reports.
"Well, D of E was an experience. There were tears shed, laughs shared and challenges overcome. With aching backs and blistered feet, every team got to the end and completed the gruelling 15k. Groups were facing constant challenges of weather and navigation. Personally, from my experience, it taught me many important life skills like communication, trust and overall determination. It brought me closer to my team. I am thankful for the opportunity to do the D of E practice and I am looking forward to the assessed expedition."

For 2024, in tribute to the contribution our British Armed Forces community make, North Kesteven District Council organised a competition where young people in our region were asked to design a flag with the theme ‘80th Anniversary of the D-Day (Normandy) Landings’.
We are pleased to announce that KSHS's very own Jessica (9W) has won the competition and her design will be used to promote the region's Armed Forces Day events. Further details of events for Armed Forces Day and Jessica's winning design will be published shortly.
