Dear Parent/Carer
Many of you who were at the production of ‘High School Musical’ earlier this term will know that we have to bid a fond farewell to Mrs Thomas, Subject Leader for Drama today, as she takes up a teaching post at an international school in Malaysia. We wish her all the best and thank her for her oversight of an excellent Drama curriculum and her direction of many fantastic school productions during her 7 years with us. We have appointed Ms Padden who currently leads the Drama Department at Banovallum School as our new Subject Leader for Drama; she will start with us in September. Miss Ferns (Assistant Head) will have oversight of the Drama department along with Miss Adamson until then.
We also say farewell to Mrs Oswald who has been a familiar face around school as a library assistant and lunchtime supervisor. Our thanks to her for her kindness and support of students.
Other staffing changes mean that after Easter Miss Gray takes over as Subject Leader for History. An ex High School student herself we are delighted that Miss Gray has returned to us after starting her teaching career in Nottinghamshire. Her appointment means that Mr Dennis remains as a full time teacher of History in school but gives up Subject Leader responsibilities.
In other happy news Mrs Cook’s baby daughter Sabrina arrived safely this week. Mrs Price, who has moved in to the area as a result of an RAF posting, has been appointed to cover her maternity leave from September to March next academic year. Temporary cover for Term 5 is planned for lower year groups with Miss Powell and Mr Periam delivering Key Stage 4 and 5 Chemistry.
School reopens on Monday 17 April to all students. Wishing everyone a very Happy Easter.
Mrs J Smith
Head of School

Year 12 and Year 13 History Conference
|
|
On Wednesday 15 March, Year 12 and 13 Historians had the fantastic opportunity to hear eight Historians lecture on different aspects of the War of the Roses. The Historians provided an academic insight into different topics that students look at during the two-year course. There was also a talk by an admissions tutor from the University of York for those are interested in studying History at university. This was the first we have participated in this event and look forward to attending it again next year.

On Wednesday 22 March Year 13 Psychology students ventured to Leeds for a Grade Booster Revision Conference hosted by Tutor2U, along with many other students from the area. The day was jam packed with activities, competitions and top tips on how to do well in their final examinations this summer. Particular emphasis was given to core topics such as research methods, approaches and issues and debates; and skills such as writing effective essays. This now marks entry to ‘the final straight’ before this year’s exam season. For the students that went on the trip, not only have they obtained a greater insight into the exam technique associated with the subject and deeper knowledge of the subject content but they also took away substantial revision materials which will aid them in their final preparations. Good luck to all psychologists! You’ve got this!

The Year 7 and year 9 geographers have been busy in recent weeks carrying out fieldwork as part of the curriculum.
As part of their learning about the ‘Geography of Crime,’ the Year 9 students have been investigating crime in Sleaford by collecting primary data. Students conducted their enquiries by identifying evidence of crime and methods of crime prevention. They also completed questionnaires which surveyed people’s views on the issues of local crime. Environmental quality surveys were conducted to assess how it may influence criminal behaviour.
The Year 7 geographers have also been introduced to fieldwork enquiry by investigating the microclimate of the KSHS school grounds. They were tasked to decide and recommend which is the most suitable place to locate a new school bench. Students used anemometers to measure wind speed and thermometers to measure temperature. They also took photographs for annotation and considered aspect and surface of the ground in their decision-making. We look forward to reading their reports and hearing their recommendations.

Reading over the Easter holidays.
A reminder that our school subscribes to a fantastic eBook resource that is free to all our students. Whilst the school library is closed over the Easter break, the eBook library provides an alternative source for books, and can be particularly useful for families who might be traveling and wish to download a selection of books onto a device to read from. Students with visual or dyslexic impairments can also benefit from using the eBook library, as customising background colours and font sizes are an available feature that can greatly enhance and improve reading experiences.
All students have an individual log in and have been sent an email reminder prior to the end of term. The eBook can be accessed from the school website or by following the link here. The App version is also available, with details from the same link.
Check out your local library over the Easter break for events and activities. Library services offer a wide range of free online resources, including audiobooks, magazines, newspapers, childrens’ encyclopaedias and Ancestry research.
Opening hours may vary due to bank holidays.

Scholastic Book Fair success
Thank you to all those students who visited our recent Scholiastic Book Fair. The pop-up book shop was very popular with our students and all purchases contributed towards Scholastic donating £175 of vouchers to be spent on books for our school library. Throughout the year students’ book recommendations are collected, and the scholastic vouchers will be used to purchase new books from this list.

Students from Year 9 and 10 have recently been invited to apply to participate in this year’s Yoto Carnegie Shadowing program. This prestigious annual book award invites young people to shadow the official judging process, reading from and ultimately voting for their own winner from the seven shortlisted books. When we return after Easter our newly formed shadowing panel will begin their judging process, meeting once a week to discuss the shortlisted books. The overall winning title, and Shadowers choice winner will both be announced in London in June.
The shortlist for 2023 may be viewed from this link The Yoto Carnegies

Graduate Careers Live! For Year 12 Students
We’d like to recommend students in Year 12 watch Graduate Careers Live!, the new twice-yearly TV programme introducing sixth form students to the graduate job market and degree apprenticeships.
The first programme is on Thursday 27 April and is specifically aimed at Year 12 sixth form students, to provide invaluable inspiration, information, and practical careers guidance about how university – or one of the growing number of degree apprenticeships – can lead to rewarding careers in areas like law, the media, engineering, technology, the public sector, banking & finance and accountancy.
Register to Watch
The programme is presented by Levi Jouavel, a BBC Three presenter who began her career as a BBC apprentice and Martin Birchall, Editor of The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers.
Featuring employers, recent graduates, degree apprentices, recruitment experts, special guests and the very latest research and insight on what it takes to be successful in the graduate job market – Graduate Careers Live! is recommended viewing for all Year 12 students and their parents, just before they begin considering their post-sixth form options, visiting universities and researching degree apprenticeship opportunities.
The programme is produced by High Fliers Research, in partnership with the Department for Education.

Student Sporting Success
Sleaford Swimming Gala
Well done to Minnie, Libby-Mae, Frankie and Lottie who swam in the Sleaford Swimming Gala. All swimmers won medals in their events. Congratulations to Frankie for winning so many of her races.

Rowing
Well done to Missy who rowed in her coxed Junior 14 Girls Quad and finished in the top 20 (out of 44) at Dorney.
The race, of two 1.9km legs up and down the lake, is competed in a time-trial manner with schools from all over the country taking part.
Despite rainy weather - but nowhere near as bad as last year’s! - Missy and the girls had a very competent row. Their time of 17:07 also beat six boys’ boats.
The girls are relatively new to rowing - this was their first time all together - but their technique bodes well for the future.

The importance of breakfast
With internal exams on the horizon for some year groups and the GCSE and A Level window edging ever near we wanted to shine a light on the importance of breakfast on our cognitive function. We all know that food is fuel and studies on cognitive function and performance in exams have highlighted just how important a nutritious breakfast is for our learners.
The conclusion of the study found that a nutritious breakfast:-
- Improves cognitive function, particularly memory, attention, and executive function
- Improves academic performance, including school grades and achievement test scores
- Increases on-task behaviour in the class
More details about the study and how you can support your child in their breakfast habits can be found at this link.

Online safety
An NSPCC investigation has revealed that UK police recorded a 66 per cent increase in child abuse image offences over the last five years. In a recent news blog, the NSPCC also argues unregulated social media is a central cause of the increase because social media companies are failing to prevent their sites being used to organise, commit and share images of child sexual exploitation.
Recent research revealed:
- Snapchat is the site most used to share child abuse images.
- Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, were used in 33 per cent of child abuse crimes on social media.
- Virtual reality environments, such as the Metaverse which is accessed through VR headsets, are now involved in child sexual abuse image crimes.
You can help protect your child by using these guides and checklists that help users set their profile settings on several social media platforms and help protect your child’s privacy and keep them safe from abuse on social media.
