Dear Parent/Carer
Last week’s assemblies recognised students who have been impressing their teachers since September with their brilliant work ethic, improvement and/or academic achievement. Subject badges were awarded to over 200 students. The pictured students received Headteacher’s Awards after being nominated by at least four of their teachers in different subjects.
The badges are just one of the ways we aim to recognise students’ success throughout the year. Growth Mindset awards, Sports Colours, Praise postcards, assembly recognition, good attendance letters, curriculum trips and face to face praise and stickers (students tell us they still love these!) are all part of our recognition system. The Student Council has recently been part of a review of rewards and there are some ideas being worked through for next academic year. We will keep you posted.
In the meantime we hope you will enjoy photos taken of the High School Musical production as well as the many other good news stories from the past two weeks.

High School Musical - What a show!
|
|
High School Musical 2023 was an absolute success and what an experience it was. As a Year 13, this was my last show and I can honestly say I had so much fun performing in this production. This was the first time we have done such a large-scale musical at school for a very long time, and it was so nice seeing all the different departments working together to help create the performance, so I would just like to take this moment to thank all of the teachers involved in making this production what it was.
We rehearsed High School Musical for a long time, and I would be lying if I said at times it didn’t feel like we were going to finish it in time for the performance, but the hard work and dedication of all cast members, ranging from Year 7 to Year 13, was apparent when we finally had a finished product. From learning songs and dances, to remembering lines, the enthusiasm of everybody really allowed this production to flourish, whilst making it an enjoyable experience for everybody. It was also lovely to see and create connections with students in other years, people that we might never have spoken to before if it hadn’t been for this production. Everybody put so much work into making this musical special, even if the rave reviews came mostly form our friends and parents.
And finally, the whole cast want to say a massive thank you to Mrs Thomas, Subject Leader of Drama, who made this production possible. From the many pep talks to the (sometimes shouted) direction we truly couldn’t have done this without her. This was Mrs Thomas’ last production before she leaves us to head to a new teaching adventure in Malaysia, and I think it is safe to say, we all did her very proud with our hard work and dedication. As the song suggests, we really were ‘All in This Together’, and I am definitely going to miss performing in these school productions!

Introducing the Student Senior Team 2023-24
|
|
Congratulations to (from left to right) Charlotte and Faith (Assistant Head Girls), Ellie (Deputy Head Girl) and Hannah (Head Girl) who make up the 2023-2024 Student Senior Team and who were appointed last week. They are a key team in school who act as a mouthpiece for the student body, support younger students, represent the school as key events and most importantly keep the staff up to date and informed on key issues affecting them as students. My thanks go to the outgoing senior team of Molly, Lizzy, Brie and Katie who have done a great job this year but who are now ready to focus on their forthcoming A Level exams.

School Council visit North Kesteven District Council (NKDC)
|
|
On Tuesday 28 February, 4 students were selected to represent the school at the North Kesteven District Youth Council. They had an introduction to the roles different Councils play and took part in some project planning focusing on the current cost of living crisis. They also discussed the work of the NKDC Environment and Climate department and decided on a project to take forward into schools at the next meeting. This will be aligned to Evelyn's Butterfly Effect, which aims to spread kindness in the memory of Evelyn Gibson. The students had a fantastic day alongside representatives of 4 other local schools and returned to school with lots of information to share with our own Student Council.

Pi Day is observed every year on 14 March. 14 March is always Pi Day since the date 3/14 resembles the first few digits of Pi: 3.14. 14 March also happens to be Albert Einstein's birthday.
We enjoyed seeing students and staff get involved with Pi themed baking.
Above is Chloe’s (7PA) Pi shaped cake and below Mrs Stacey’s Pi Pie. They both look delicious!
Students took part in a Pi Word Challenge in tutor time, well done to Chloe (9A) who found the most number of words starting with ‘Pi’ in 3 minutes. At break time made a Pi Paper chain which features more than 100 digits of Pi. Olivia V, Liv B, Jessie L and Ellie V in Year 10 showed great leadership and organisation in managing the queue of students eager to add their name to the next digit.
In PE, Year 9 students did some quick maths before running 3.142km.
Maths lessons all featured some circle-based learning, along with Year 7 completing these Pi Skylines. Shown to the right those drawn by are Chloe (7AH) and Hope (7HB).
Students in Year 8 wrote some creative and tasty sounding Pi Haiku’s English. Below is the Haiku written by Evelyn (8A).
Students competed in their language lessons to read the digits of Pi in German or French, and they learnt about the origin of the letter used to represent the value of Pi.

Library and Literacy News

Last week I was fortunate to compete in the 80th Lincoln Music and Drama Festival. I had the opportunity to watch some outstanding performances and take part myself, in verse speaking, narrative prose, dramatic solo, and open Shakespeare.
The competition was fierce and, I was delighted to achieve three second places, but the highlight for me was gaining first place in the open-age Shakespeare category, and winning the Marion Haigh trophy, performing an extract from Romeo and Juliet.
It really was an amazing experience.

National Reading Champions Quiz 2023
Congratulations to our two teams who have taken part in the East Midland’s heats of this year's National Reading Champions Quiz. This annual event is organised by the National Literacy Trust, with teams from secondary schools up and down the country competing against each other in literary themed rounds.
Reading together
Members of our key stage 3 book club have been reading Nisha's War by Dan Smith and will be discussing it at next week's meeting. Reading collectively in a group and contributing to book themed discussions is a fantastic way to enhance reading outcomes, as well as being a relaxing social activity.
Book Club is every Wednesday in the Library from 3.30pm-4.15pm.
New members from Years 7-9 are always welcome.
For our older readers we will shortly be launching this year’s Carnegie Medal Shadowing Book Club. This group will be reading from the shortlisted titles being considered for the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing; a British literary award that annually recognises outstanding new books for children and young adults. The book club will get to vote for their favourite book and shadow the judging process through to the final announcements of this year's winner in June.
Details of how to apply to participate in this book club will be announced shortly.

As you may have seen, Buckingham Palace has announced that Prince Edward is the new Duke of Edinburgh.
The Duke has been a passionate and active supporter of our charity for many years, having achieved his own Gold Award in 1986 and becoming a Trustee in 1988. Indeed, he has presented Gold Awards to several of our students at Buckingham Palace.
Later this year, 20 students from the Robert Carre Trust will receive their award. Photos will follow in a May newsletter.

This week Year 10 and Year 12 students had the opportunity to take part in the careers event ‘I’m a Medic - Get me out of here!’. They entered a live chat with various healthcare professionals in the NHS, such as GPs, mental healthcare providers, trainee nurses, pharmacists and even NHS managers. The students really enjoyed asking questions about their careers, what qualifications they required and even about their hobbies! At the end of the live chat pupils were able to vote for their favourite healthcare professional for the chance to win a prize.

Year 11 GCSE PE Rock Climbing

Student success – Rowing
Josie (7AH) competed at Lincoln Head Race which was hosted by Lincoln Rowing Club and rowed the W J12 2x (12 years girls double) with her rowing partner. They won!
They rowed a 1.7KM course to finish in just over 10 minutes. They hadn't had much opportunity to train together prior to this race, so this was a great result for them.
Missy (8F), Emma (9F) and Amelie (9F), also won a trophy in a Junior 14 coxed quad.
Well done to all!
