Term 3  -  11.02.2022

Dear Parent/Carer

It’s been great to see students embracing extracurricular activities this half term both in school and in regional competitions too. Whilst many are involved in rehearsals for ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Girls Like That’ our Lego League team have made the national finals which take place in Harrogate later this month. Congratulations to them! After the reduction in opportunities for all young people since 2020 it’s fantastic to see students working collaboratively and above all, having fun together. I hope you enjoy reading about their successes.

Lego League Success

KSHS team ‘Legoless’ are regional champions – National Finals await!

On Friday 4 February the KSHS team, Legoless, competed in the regional heats of Lego league. Despite technical issues on the day, Legoless achieved incredible points across the board to fend off the challenge from 8 other teams to be crowned regional champions! The national finals now await, in Harrogate, on 26 February. This is where the top teams throughout the UK compete with the ultimate aim of representing the UK on the international stage.

FIRST® LEGO® league is an international robotics competition, where students have to design, build and programme a robot to autonomously complete a series of missions linked to that year’s theme. This season’s competition is called Cargo Connect and is all about making the transportation of goods more efficient and environmentally friendly. Teams are also tasked with an innovation project - designing a solution linked to the annual theme.

Lego league is open to all years groups, 7-11, and we have students participating currently from years 7, 9 and 10. It’s great to see such a wide range of ages competing alongside each other and learning new skills together. If this sounds like something your child may be interested in, then look out for the start of the new tournament in September – new members are always welcome!

Duke of Edinburgh

On Sunday 30 January 63 Year 9 students attended the DofE training day. We had a great day and they covered all elements required for a DofE expedition and consolidated practically the theory training, including; Rucksacks, Kit, Packing, Cooking, Stove Safety, Menu Planning, Tents, Map Reading, Route Planning, Route Cards & Tracings, and First Aid including CPR and the Defibrilator.

Thank you to the 8 volunteer staff who attended in support of myself, the DofE Co-ordinator.

I was impressed by the diligence shown throughout the day and enjoyed getting the 2022 season of to a great start.

Roll on the expeditions; Well done everyone!
